Camp: Music Theory
Instructor: Stephanie Lange Experience this high-level course designed to strengthen your sight-reading skills. Over the 5 days, we will work on melodic and rhythmic notation, key signatures, scales, triads, seventh chords, rhythmic and melodic dictation. Reading will be taught using solfege and moveable do. This course is geared towards highly motivated students who are interested in furthering their knowledge in sight- reading prior to working in any high-level music ensemble or theory class. Camp: Make Your Own Short Film
Instructor: Kevin Eikenberg Thanks to digital cameras, film and video as a medium has become far more accessible. During this camp, students will learn the basics of the equipment as well as the basics of storytelling, composition, and post-production. By studying different styles of movies from animated films, music videos, and narrative films, students will then create films of their own. Whether they have a passion for photography, directing, editing, or acting, there is a role for them in production, and they will leave the camp having the tools to expand their craft on their own. Camp: YouTube Video for Musicians 101
Instructor: Kevin Eikenberg YouTube has created an enormously powerful self-promotion tool for artists of all mediums, and it has never been easier or more cost effective to create them on your own. The ability to record and post your own videos is becoming more than just a hobby; it is a legitimate way to get yourself heard on a larger scale. You will learn the fundamentals of video production and editing including camera technique, DIY solutions for big budget results, and techniques for getting your video seen on YouTube. We will focus on the basics of audio techniques, including microphone placement and technique, how to get great sounds out of low budget equipment, and basic audio editing. Participants are encouraged to enter prepared with a piece or song they would like to record, however this is not mandatory. All will leave with a video of their piece, or a video that they have filmed and produced. Session 1 June 1-5, 4-6pm Session 2 June 29-July 3, 4-6pm |
Camp: Brass Ensemble
Instructor: Peter Lander Be a part of a week of intense brass training through the vehicle of brass chamber music. Get an opportunity to play a wide range of brass quintet and ensemble repertoire, in addition to receiving highly specialized technical and musical guidance from a professional music educator and trumpet performer. As part of this session, each student will also receive advice on how to build an individually crafted maintenance routine that will ensure the brass students’ steady progress in the areas of range, tone, articulation, flexibility, endurance, and musical phrasing. Camp: Finding the Groove
Instructor: Bob Novak Explore rhythm through a fun and immersive class designed for instrumental and vocal musicians interested in strengthening their timing, rhythm, and groove. Through the medium of hand drumming and rhythmic exercises, participants will learn the art of playing and feeling syncopated beats, develop a better understanding of poly-rhythms, and finally, will perform music evolving from West African traditional drumming. Camp: Vocal Boot Camp
Instructor: Stephanie Lange Get your voice into shape with this intensive 5-day course in all the basics of singing. Whether you are a soloist or a chorister this class is a perfect starting place for a young singer. Styles and genres vary from classical, musical theater, contemporary and art song. Learn some great tricks to keep your voice healthy and focused. Explore solo singing, ensemble singing, fun warm-ups, and partner songs, while strengthening your breath support, range, and tone quality. If you are looking to work hard on sharpening your vocal skills, then this vocal boot camp is the place for you. This camp is geared towards students entering grade 6-12. Camp: Advanced Musical Theater
Instructor: Colleen Daly Experience this high level course designed to build your performance techniques for Musical Theater. We will do individual work on two musical theater pieces with the goal of performing a short concert at the end of the week. Students will sing individually each day, developing vocal technique and strategies for fearless performance and auditioning. This course is geared toward advanced students in grades 6-12. Camp: Recording Arts
Instructor: Jason Alford Learn everything you need to know to start making your own recordings. Review the basics of home recording, including overviews of and activities with software, microphones, effects, and much more! MEET THE INSTRUCTORS
Mrs. Colleen Daly Eberhardt has maintained a thriving private voice studio in Howard County for six years. She has taught students of all ages and abilities, and many of her students have gone on to major successfully in music and theater at distinguished colleges and conservatories across the country. In addition to her private studio, Colleen has been in demand as an instructor at various organizations; she was a professor of voice at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, an instructor at Young People’s Summer Stock and Young Artists of America performing arts camps, and has led her own musical theater and opera intensives. In addition to her teaching schedule, Colleen maintains a critically acclaimed performance career, with appearances across the country in opera, recital, and concert. Mr. Terry N. Eberhardt received his Bachelor’s of Music in Vocal Performance and Music Education from the Peabody Conservatory of Music and Master’s in Opera Performance at The University of Maryland Opera Studio. Mr. Eberhardt currently serves as the Fine Arts Instructional Team leader at Marriotts Ridge High School, where his choirs consistently earn Superior ratings at local, state, and national festivals. Mr. Eberhardt is on the voice faculty at Towson University. In 2008 Mr. Eberhardt was named the “Howard County Teacher of the Year” for his commitment to music excellence in the classroom. Mr. Eberhardt was featured as a “Choral Director of Note” in the January 2011 edition of the Choral Director Magazine. This year Mr. Eberhardt was featured on the cover of the National Association for Music Education’s Music Magazine.
Mr. Kevin Eikenberg realized he had a love for the arts and an early age. He began playing percussion in the 4th grade. His love and passion for music would never leave. In middle school he started doing video projects for school. The combination of mixing image with music intrigued him and he began exploring the art of filmmaking. Ever since, he’s been watching, and making movies incessantly. He recently graduated from the American University in Washington D.C. where he double majored in Music and Film and Media Arts. In addition to his videography services, Kevin is an avid Director of Photography for numerous current narrative and documentary projects around the area, in addition to an active percussionist playing the Baltimore Washington Area.
Ms. Stephanie Lange has been teaching private voice for seven years to students of all ages and levels, and teaches genres ranging from jazz and musical theater to classical and opera. In addition to her private studio, she was brought on as a voice teacher with Butler Opera Center Young Artist Program at the University of Texas-Austin and for the Leander Independent School District in Austin, TX. As a performer, she maintains a lively schedule performing concert, opera and recital work both locally and nationally. Ms. Lange holds a Master of Music degree in Opera Performance from the University of Texas at Austin and a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from St. Olaf College. www.stephanie-lange.com
Mr. Bob Novak has performed in the United States and Europe as a solo percussionist, chamber musician and orchestral musician. He is an accompanist and composer for the University of Maryland School of Theatre, Dance, and Performing Studies. Shortly after receiving his Master of Music degree at the Peabody Conservatory of Music, he traveled to Ghana to explore the complex poly-rhythms and structures of various drumming styles inherent to West Africa. Bob has studied with master percussionists Glen Velez, Jonathan Haas, and William Moersch. He has played percussion with a number of orchestras including the Baltimore Opera Company, Richmond Symphony, Maryland Symphony and Annapolis Symphony Orchestra. He taught at Morgan State University and has presented master classes and workshops in the Baltimore and Washington DC area.
